About us

Oneka’s all natural personal care products were created out of respect for our water sources and the many organisms that help clean and purify it along its way. Rather than causing damage or polluting; Oneka products work WITH the elements of nature. We do this by using certified organic and wild harvested herbal extracts to nourish the hair and body without sulfates, parabens, or synthetic fragrances. All of our products are made in Canada.

Our passion for all natural personal care products

Through Oneka, Philippe Choiniere and Stacey Lecuyer want to have a positive impact on people's health and the water ecosystems. Before starting this business, Stacey had been suffering from eczema for over 20 years; and Philippe had been allergic to synthetic fragrances since being a baby. For these two life-enthusiasts, Oneka is a way to express their desire to see positive change, as well as make people's lives better by developing and producing all natural personal care products.

Sustainability matters

We don’t claim to be perfect, but we're trying to do the right thing! It may sound like a cliché, but we want to leave things better than when we found them. We strive to do business in a more sustainable way, by taking responsibility for the impact of our business on society and the environment; and transforming our impact from negative to positive. It’s part of our quest to become a truly sustainable, all natural business.

Building a solid foundation

Our organic farm operates on the fundamental principles of permaculture. Taking an all-natural approach, with sensitivity to the land’s needs, as well as sustainable production; the foundation of permaculture is to create systems and methods that are permanently beneficial to the environment and society.

Our farm strives to achieve both. Socially, we are active and connected with our community and region; with a global mindset. Environmentally, we operate our farm and harvest our botanicals in a way that will add to the quality of our land and its ecosystems, rather than deplete and harm them. And everything we grow is done 100% organically.

What's in a name?

The name Oneka comes from the Mohawk native language, it has been chosen for its meaning - water - the protection and respect of this element being at the center of our mission and our activities. We have chosen it with gratitude for its beauty, the universality of its pronunciation and the deep connection we have felt with it.

It reflects both the importance for us to craft natural personal care products that respect aquatic environments, and our deep esteem for Indigenous peoples' cultures, values and heritage.

Although our company bears an indiginous name and our activities take place on Abenaki land, our products are not formulated according to any indigenous knowledge, and we do not claim any tradition in that matter.

Choosing an indigenous name for our business is not something we take lightly. We are fully aware that our duty to honor and take responsibility toward Indigenous peoples is even greater because of this choice.

We have in our network of mentors, two Metis individuals who, through their teachings, share some of their knowledge. We try our best to infuse this indigenous knowledge into our professional and our personal practices.

We also make a point of highlighting the work of Indigenous entrepreneurs. Each of our conversations with them is an opportunity to listen and learn from their experience and their ways of conducting business.

Since July 2020, we also have actively supported Water First, an organization that works with Indigenous communities across Canada to improve their access to drinking water.

We can't ignore the inequalities these communities who have so much to teach us are facing every day. Our wish is for our company to stand as a true ally for them.

We still have a long way to go, but we are trying hard to get there, guided by mindful and benevolent listening, resources that educate us and awaken our conscience, and above all, the desire to always do better.
